Medic Mobile - RESEARCH FELLOW
Medic Mobile is a leader in using human-centered design for implementing high-impact mHealth projects. We believe that technology is only as good as what a user does with it, and have learned that understanding existing workflows, local context, and user behavior are critical to a project's success. We are seeking a passionate summer fellow to contribute to the design, documentation, and dissemination of our priority use cases.
This position will work closely with our Senior Designer and liaise with our regional teams in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
You will get to explore questions like: What makes an mHealth project successful? How do you replicate use cases across diverse cultural and geographic regions? What are the best indicators to track health impact?
You will be steeped in Medic's design process and use human-centered design to help us solve challenges like: How might we better engage health workers with low-literacy? How might we use our tools to reach patients and family members directly?
Specifically, you will:
-- Conduct an audit of Medic projects by use case, identifying meaningful nuances in their design, and drawing connections to other use cases built off a similar evidence base
-- Create an easy-to-reference sketch library to make it easy for the global Medic Mobile team to reference and build upon for new partnership talks and proposals
-- Create an asset list and index organized by: a) topic area (e.g. cancer, malaria, maternal health) and b) use case (e.g. appointment reminders, stock monitoring)
-- Create a required asset list for each project (e.g. current system sketch, proposed sketch)
-- Make suggestions for impact metrics for priority use cases rooted in global health research
— With the Medic Mobile research working group, help us build out our research roadmap of the most important questions we should be asking ourselves as mHealth implementers
YOU:
-- have a strong interest in mHealth
-- are inspired by the principles of human-centered design
-- are excited to tackle big, tough questions, yet know the answers are sometimes found by digging into the details
-- can work and think independently, and welcome feedback
-- are a visual thinker and aren't afraid of a Sharpie and a piece of blank paper
Some experience in public health and/or international development is helpful, but not required.
The intern's supervisor is based in San Francisco. This is a remote work opportunity, and not a field placement. A minimum commitment of two days per week for one semester is required. This is currently a volunteer role and we encourage students to seek their own funding.

Using Mobile Technology to Improve Access to Health Services
VillageReach is a nonprofit social enterprise that extends the reach of health services to remote, underserved communities by creating dynamic delivery and information monitoring systems. Despite improvements over the past five years, mortality rates in Malawi remain among the worst in the world. Underlying causes of children’s and women’s poor health include unavailability of timely information, delayed care-seeking, and compromised access to quality health services among rural and impoverished communities. To address these barriers, VillageReach has been piloting a toll-free hotline to improve case management of maternal and child health and increased uptake of community-accessed and facility-based services n rural areas, providing direct access to information, advice, and health promotion regarding maternal, neonatal, and child health. This service will be expanded to additional districts in order to reach more individuals with lifesaving advice and to build the evidence base supporting the impact and cost-effectiveness of the service in preparation for a national scale-up.

Ma Sante: Use of Mobile Technology to Improve Community Case Management of Malaria
The International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) is a non-profit foundation, with over 15 years of experiences in using information and communication technology as a tool for development. To further improve child and maternal health monitoring in Yirimadjo, a poor outskirt community of Bamako, Mali, IICD and Orange Mali have partnered with a community development program to strengthen the work of local mothers acting as Community Health Workers (CHWs) via mobile phones. By making use of mobile phones and a special mobile application, the semi-literate CHWs improve patient case management by conducting prevention, diagnosis and treatment in a more efficient and cost-effective way, thus service more people faster in Yirimadjo. The community development program focuses particularly on malaria, as it is one of the main causes of maternal and child mortality in the area.

Directorate of MIS – Government of Bangladesh Ministry of Health
The Management Information System (MIS-Health) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) of the Bangladesh Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recently received a United Nations ICT Award for its accomplishments in developing and implementing e and mhealth strategies for the national health system. The Bangladesh Government uses information and communication technology for health and nutrition programs, particularly by contributing to improvements in maternal and child health. The activities of MIS-Health relating to health information systems include collection of data from various sources and cleaning, analyzing, and summarizing the data to generate and distribute information through routine administrative report, website, yearbook, health bulletin, newsletter, etc. The existing data-flow system comprises a network, covering all health facilities and health administrative points from the national to the upazila level. Data from health facilities below the upazila levels are sent to upazila health offices through paper-based forms where these are processed electronically. Several online databases have been created. A database software called District Health Information System (version 2) is used for collecting health service data across the country. Johns Hopkins Investigators work in close collaboration with the DGHS and the MOHFW on a number of projects, including the mCare and JiVitA projects.
