GSMA – Our role

The GSMA represents the interests of the worldwide mobile operator community. Spanning 219 countries, the GSMA unites nearly 800 of the world's mobile operators as its members, as well as linking them with more than 200 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem (including; handset makers, software companies, equipment providers, Internet companies, and media and entertainment organizations). The GSMA is focused on innovating, incubating and creating new opportunities for its membership, all with the end goal of driving the growth of the mobile communications sector and the role of operators within it. In addition, we work with Governments, regulators and NGO’s to develop the social and economic value of mobile on a country, region and global basis. Finally we operate and produce the world leading Mobile World Congress and its sister events.

GSMA - mWomen Programme

The GSMA mWomen Programme aims to increase women’s access to and use of mobile phones and life-enhancing mobile services in developing markets. The programme’s objectives are to: encourage industry to serve resource-poor women; increase the availability of life-enhancing value-added services; promote solutions to women’s barriers to usage.

The programme aims to achieve these objectives by working with mobile operators, value-added service providers, and other mobile industry members, as well as non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other international development partners. The Role

The role of Programme Director is a senior leadership role which will involve taking responsibility for driving the programme to meet its objectives and ensuring success of all work within the programme.

Main responsibilities:

  • Programme leadership and execution of the programme specific initiatives with a focus on delivery
  • Thought leadership in own area and the ability to communicate across the wider organisation
  • Leadership of a portfolio of project work and delivery to time, quality and budget
  • Working with key stakeholders across the area including mobile operators, NGOs, donor organisations and other key partners
  • Leading a high performing varied team of professionals
  • Ensuring the programme is professionally managed
  • Proactively and effectively managing all aspects of communication related to the Programme
  • Leading the main programme workstreams of commercial grant distribution and management, advocacy and advisory services, partnerships and monitoring and evaluation.

Criteria for Selection

We welcome applications from professionals with the following demonstrated qualifications:

  • Experience of/passion for for the ways mobile phones can empower women in the developing world
  • Demonstrable, high performing leadership experience and skills
  • Experience of managing programmes
  • Experience managing high-performing, diverse and geographically distributed teams
  • Experience and familiarity with the mobile industry, ideally with exposure to the mobile for development sector
  • Experience working as a management consultant or within corporate strategy, business planning or marketing functions, ideally within the telecoms industry
  • Excellent qualitative and quantitative analytical skills, including the ability to generate frameworks and structure analyses
  • Experience establishing and managing productive client relationships, including C-level executives
  • Experience working in developing markets
  • Experience delivering results both through individual contribution and through culturally diverse, collaborative teams
  • Fluent and compelling written and oral communications skills, particularly in English
  • An entrepreneurial, creative, can-do orientation
  • Conscientious, with high personal standards and attention to detail
  • Excited to travel globally 20-30% of the time
  • Authorisation to work in the UK.
